NOMAD COFFEE
and the cult of coffee
Whether it’s because of its flavour, a world away from the bitterness to which we are accustomed, or because of the craft production process, speciality coffee is gaining increasingly more devotees. In recent years, its consumption in the home has increased substantially, largely due to the pandemic and teleworking. And there are already over 50 specialist shops in Barcelona alone.
NOMAD Coffee Lab is located in the heart of Barcelona’s Born district at Passatge de Sert, 12. A place to relish new ways of serving, savouring, communicating and feeling speciality coffee at its very finest. Since opening its doors in 2014, it has never stopped growing and expanding internationality, always with a vision of cultivating a taste for speciality coffee and bringing it to the general public.
Proximity, respect for producers and attention to the details in the entire production chain are the values that define this project. In the words of its founder, Jordi Mestre: ‘We regularly receive samples of green coffee beans from small producers. We research and play and imbue them with the roasting profile that best fits the precise characteristics of each type of coffee. We only work with producers whose backgrounds we know well, because we believe in fair trade and are concerned about the working conditions of the people who work most closely with the plants and coffee beans.
Jordi Mestre started his career in the world of coffee by working with some of the best roasters and at the best cafes in London. On his days off, he would visit the city’s most mythical street markets, preparing and serving coffee with his own coffee cart and, hence, the name NOMAD.
Soon after NOMAD opened its own coffee roaster and started to distribute its products and to create a collaborative network of cafes, leading to the project’s international growth.
Today, it has three shops in Barcelona. Frutas Selectas is the latest new addition. As well as speciality coffee, the café also sells locally-sourced bread, food, and fruits and vegetables.
